What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the foundation for highly effective workplace relationships – a key component in building trust, influence and engagement. Emotionally intelligent leaders create higher productivity, better customer service, greater sales, and longer retention. While most managers and leaders have a high level of expertise on the technical side of their work, few have substantial training in the human side of the job. In an era of rapid change and complex organizations, it takes a robust set of people skills to drive performance.

During this course, participants will:
- Learn how emotional intelligence is a critical component to breakthrough leadership
- Understand and use a powerful action model of EQ: Know Yourself, Choose Yourself, Give Yourself
- Gain an insight and awareness of their own behavior and reactions while decoding the hidden language of emotions.

- Understand how optimism and resiliency increases personal energy and effectiveness
- Practice empathetic listening skills
- Connect with their sense of purpose in the workplace
Pre-Course Assessment:
- Participant Self-Assessment only: For this option, each participant will take the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence (SEI™) Leadership assessment prior to the workshop to gain an understanding of their current level of EQ. The SEI is unique because it is an action-oriented, practical, and in-depth tool backed by world leaders in EQ. With outstanding psychometrics and a solid model for learning, SEI is the best-in-class tool for measuring and developing emotional intelligence. Each participant will receive a 1-hour personal telephone debrief of their assessment by a SEI certified coach prior to the course. This will help each participant have a focus on their areas of strengths and developments prior to coming to the workshop.
- 360 Assessment using the SEI: This option includes the above, but also gives the participant insight into how others perceive their EQ strengths and areas for development.
Post- Course Assessment is strongly recommended to be able to measure the amount of improvement for each participant. Re-assessment is recommended between 3 and 6 months following the initial workshop. This allows each person to practice their new skills and put their development plan created during the course into action.
Course Outline:
- An Introduction to Emotional Intelligence - 1 hour 15 minutes: This section will increase awareness of competencies for leadership excellence and through a business case, clarify the need for EQ skills for leadership. This will also include an introduction to the Six Second Action Model of EQ: Know Yourself, Choose Yourself, Give Yourself
- The Model: Know Yourself - 1 hour 30 minutes: This section will give a brief summary of the neuro-science behind emotional intelligence. Participants will define a ‘pattern’ related to their leadership style and learn the “Video Camera” tool for self-awareness. The workshop will also help participants understand the importance of emotions and the role they play in the workplace.
- The Model: Choose Yourself - 1 hour 30 minutes: Building on the previous section, the Choose Yourself portion of the model helps participants increase awareness of managing emotions for effective leadership. This section follows the idea that it’s not just what you do, but HOW you do it that matters. This section will help participants see how they are leading with intention rather than through reaction and will give tools to help participants navigate emotions.
- Optimism & Resiliency – 45 minutes: Participants increase their awareness of the connection between physical, mental and emotional states and how these drive performance. Participants will learn the “PPP-TIE” model for using an optimistic approach.
- The Model: Give Yourself - 1 hour 30 minutes: Participants will learn about how building trust and emotions are tied together and will help participants take an “other approach”. We discuss the role of empathy and develop awareness of the value empathy plays within the workplace. This section will go through the skills of authentic appreciation and empathic listening. This section will also help participants connect to leading from a place of purpose which in turn helps them in their ability to usefully engage emotions to motivate and inspire.
- Action Planning- 30 minutes: Each participant will be required to develop a personal action plan of what they will do over the next 30 days to implement these skills back in the workplace.
